Chung Hwa

Concepción – Chile

ChungHwa began taking shape in 2019, following the reunion of Esteban Sepúlveda (keyboards) and Luis Silva (drums), years after they had shared the stage with their respective bands as part of the rock and pop scene in Concepción, their hometown.

Both musicians have a well-established background in Concepción’s music scene, particularly during the 2000s, when they were involved in projects such as Manzana Gris and Más.

The project emerged as an instrumental exploration blending elements of modern jazz and nu jazz, indie, rock, and electronic music, combining rhythmic layers, atmospheres, and sonic textures.

The keyboard-and-drums duo format gives them the musical freedom they were looking for, inspired by the new sounds they discovered through nu jazz bands and musicians. These influences are incorporated into the indie spirit that has accompanied them since their early years as musicians. The format also allows them to experiment with these sounds and rhythms, bringing them into structures more commonly associated with pop songwriting.

ChungHwa presents a minimalist approach within its musical landscape, both through the decision to perform as a duo and through the sounds they explore, where dynamics play a fundamental role in the expression and interaction of both instruments.

Their debut EP consists of five tracks, developed entirely at La Makinita studio in Santiago. The process covered everything from composition and rehearsals to recording, mixing, and mastering, and was carried out in collaboration with producer Pablo Contreras.
